In the tiny, poverty-stricken and largely forgotten town of Nucla, Colorado, owning a gun is not a luxury nor a matter of personal preference – it’s the law.

In May 2013, the Nucla Town Board voted 5-1 to require that residents own firearms for protection, with exceptions for heads of households who don’t want to participate or who cannot legally possess a gun.
